2011-12

Guest Speaker Director's Report 2011/2012

During the year, a selection of interesting guest speakers was achieved covering a wide range of appeal.

We heard about the work of the Historic Houses Trust and the care of key historic buildings and sites in NSW. Patrick Dodds of Sydney Harbour Federation Trust gave us a presentation "Rediscovering Our Harbour Gems".

Information about care and support of people of all ages living with arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions was given to us with advice from Arthritis, NSW; also Dr Ross Colquhoun, a researcher and clinical health

psychologist told us about his Mindcheck Wellness Centres and online testing to provide diagnosis and treatment planning for people with dementia.

On a more personal vein, we heard about Paula and Julien Vanslambrouck and about Julien's life under the Germans in WW 11 and how he came to Australia and Paula's story of a young girl living in a big family of nine children during the Depression with the shame of Dad out of work.

Dr Penny Farrant returned with the audio visual presentation of life on board the International Space Station and a personally narrated video by NASA US astronaut Greg Chamitof.

Our own member Dr Carl Edmonds made a stimulating presentation about euthanasia which stimulated much discussion.

Dr Marlene Hicken's subject was "Mothers Under The Microscope" where she examined the powerful role mothers play in our lives by their presence and absence both physical and emotional and both their action and inaction.

2009-2011

Guest Speaker Director's Report 2010/2011

I believe that we have had a most informative and varied list of speakers over the past twelve months. We learnt about the Bahai Temple and their faith. We had Dr John Kwok from the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital telling us of their brilliant research work. Andrew Rogers showed us his dive to the wreck of the Titanic. Our own Dr Brian Corrigan delighted us with some reminiscences with his work in Sports Medicine. We were told of the great work being done by the volunteers of the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society at Albion Park.

Michael Fay spoke on the history of the Australian baggy-green cricket cap. Michelle Thompson -Liang enthralled us with her background as an audiologist specialising in hearing difficulties in young children. Kevin Golsby gave us a history lesson as it was the bi-centenary of Governor Lachlan Macquaries arrival in Australia. Anne Jackson told us of the hardships she experienced nursing in the Sudan. Finally Penny Farrant brought us up to date with the latest on the International Space Station and the Australian native seeds that spent six months there.
