| Probus is the retiree offshoot of Rotary
although previous membership of Rotary is not necessary to join Probus. Manly
Probus Club Inc was established 30 years ago as a men's club under the
sponsorship of Manly Rotary Club. In March 2010, members voted
overwhelmingly to change to a mixed gender club. Prior to this, ladies had
been warmly involved in all activities except club management and voting.
Probus
Clubs are non-political and non-sectarian.
They are non-profit making and have no fund raising
activities. All Probus Clubs are sponsored by Rotary Clubs, but on
formation, are totally autonomous. The
emphasis is on clubs being
free from the constraints and obligations of service clubs and involving
members at minimum cost.
Based at Manly in Sydney, most social
activities tend to centre around the harbour, ferry travel and the
beautiful northern beaches. Club membership is currently set at 120 and
expressions of interest in joining Probus can be made to us at any time. Enquirers
do not have to reside in Manly. Annual subscription
is currently $32 for an individual member and $48 for a couple. The
joining fee is $25 for an individual or a couple.
We have five core activities designed to promote social
interaction and getting out and about.
Monthly, there is
a club general meeting at 10:00 am at Seaforth on the third Thursday of
each month with interesting guest speakers plus a social walk at a
beautiful northern beaches location in the first week of the month.
Bi-monthly, we have day trips to exciting Sydney locations and our
own sporting events such as golf and bowls.
Annually, we have away trips to places and events such as Canberra's
Floriade or Yule fest at Katoomba in the Blue Mountains. Members are kept
informed by regular monthly newsletters.
What is Probus?
Probus is an association of retired and semi-retired professional and
business people who have held positions of responsibility in any worthy
vocation and who appreciate and value opportunities for
social contact with others in similar circumstances. The
organization aims to stimulate thought, interest & participation in
activities which provide regular opportunities to keep member’s minds
active, expand their interests and to enjoy the fellowship of new friends,
when horizons are narrowing and opportunities to make new friends are
limited.
